UNDER 17 MAGPIES--LEAGUE CHAMPS

What a fantastic season!!!

This years team had five returners from last seasons championship squad, they are, Shaun,James,Leon, tom and Rohan.

We started the season slow but worked hard and came together as a "TEAM",while improving each week in preparation for the playoffs. The Magpies finished the regular season in third place behind Kings Langley and the Castle Hill Lancers in a very tight competition. The play offs were full of suspense and extremely exciting baseball with a fine line between the top four teams. The "Cardiac kids" proved to be true champions by coming from behind to win in each play off game.

The semi final game had the drama of the winning run at second base with two outs in the bottom of the last dig for the C.H Archers but James got the hitter fly out to end the game.

We faced the tough Kings Langley team who beat us twice during the regular season. Down by two runs in top of the last inning, we dug our self a hole by walking the first three batters before a pitcher change saw "lefty" (Ben) come in and mow down the next three batters. In our last three outs of the game we became very patient at the plate and put the pressure on the pitcher to throw strikes, it all came down to the winning run at third with two outs and Stevvo at the plate. With a keen eye he drew a game winning base on balls. The Grand Final was action packed all game vs theCastle Hill Lancers with pressure felt by both sides. In the last inning Benny strutted to the mound and once again aced the opposition one, two, three. In our last at bat of the season, down by two runs, we rallied to tie the game on the second out of the inning. Josh on third with our big hitter at the plate, "Ro" hit a massive fly to right that turned into the game winning hit, the "bad news bears" had done it again. We refused too give up, showed a lot of heart, played as a "TEAM" and boys enjoyed playing baseball together. Well done guys, great season, it was a lot of FUN!!! I would like to personally thank the players for their effort and enthusiasm all season. Thanks Peter for all your assistance as a manager and base coach, also a big thanks to our wonderful scorer Christine Brown(also Chris who filled in from time to time). We had a strong support crew from parents and friends each week and i think the players lifted their game from that positive encouragement. Thanks again to all those that helped us have memorable season of Baseball,

Josh Strong: A solid performance as our starting catcher and as our lead off batter who was consistently our catalyst. A enthusiastic player who loves the game and always played hard. Josh was this years winner of the coaches award. Batted .340 with 20 stolen bases and in his short stint on the mound stuck out 9 batters in 6 innings.

Ben Lees: Played a solid first base and pitched well all season, including a dominate performance during the Finals. Benny won the "Players Player Award", voted on after each game by the players. Batted .390 in 24 games and led the team in Ab's, runs and singles.

Rohan Brown: A great overall season at shortstop and at the plate. "Ro"had the winning RBI hit in the Grand Final. Winner of the "Batting Award" with a overall B.A of .509 and led the team in RBI's (29),hits(29),and stolen bases(26).

Shaun Sheridan: Our "ace" on the mound all season and winner of the pitching award with a ERA of 2.17 in 37.3 innings pitched and recorded team leading 30 strike outs. Shaun batted .327 and stole 19 bases and led the team in defensive assists with 18. Shaun performed best in the tight play off games in which reached base each game without getting out and as solid for three innings each game on the mound.

James Stonestreet: In his second season of organized baseball, James proved to be a "Natural", could play any position well. Developed into asolid pitcher with 26 strike outs in 16 innings. James has power and could really drive the ball. Would have won the "Rookie of the year award" if the club allowed more than three awards per team. Fantastic effort all
season James.

Leon Axford: A great team player with a lot of passion for the game,a veteran of the club since T-ball. A utility player that could do it all, pitch, catch, play infield and outfield. had the best fielding percentage on the team at .947. Leon was our editor for the web site match report for most of the season. Leon even broke his nose while catching at practice to block the ball from passing him.

Tom McGuire: A fine utility player and team player. Played a solid second base and was valuable to us in centerfield during the play off stretch. A fine pitcher for us all season. Tom lead the team in base on balls with 23and finished the season with 20 stolen bases. Great job all season.

Mathew Wood: A natural athlete and put a lot of effort into his baseball week in and week out. Matty batted a very respectable .317 and his biggest at bat came in the grand final with a walk and scoring the run to tie the game with two outs in the last inning. Great effort all season.

Steve Ruxton: The most improved player on the team throughout the season. Made some clutch catches under pressure and some fine sacrifice bunts. Stevo also lead the team with hit by pitches (2). Well done Steve.

Brendan Sedgers: Played many positions this season from the infield to outfield to our back up catcher. A good contact hitter who usually put the ball into play. Brendan always seemed to enjoy his baseball and would hustle all the time. A fine player to have on our team. Great job!!

The competition started with five teams and increased to six teams by the addition of Carlingford after the first completed round. Similar to last year, the competition was highly competitive and of a high standard with all teams having State Cup standard players and at least four NSW State team standard players in their rosters.

The team was young and close to the smallest in the league. Seven of the ten players were first year and eligible to play in the U14 grade next season. Each team on any given day was able to beat any other team in the competition with our nemesis being Schofields who always seemed to be able to pip us on the post.

The team trained and performed well. Apart from a couple of games they had a belief that they could win games and that they were never beaten and this was shown in the Grand Final when they again nearly stole the game from Castle Hill.

Byron Aird:           As a true age player this was a big season for Byron. Played at shortstop and made some great plays. A great season in the batting box but appeared a bit jaded at the end and in the finals, probably as a result of being the leading NSW batter at the U14 National Championships. However truly a wonderful season which earned him representative honours at both State Cup and National Championship levels.

Scott Cone:          Took on the starting pitcher’s duties and finished the season as a steady and reliable performer with great efforts in the final series games.  Developed a patience in the batting box and was moved up into the lead batters role due to his good eye and ability to make pitchers work hard for his out. Selected in the winning Hill’s Association Cup team.

Jeremy De Gooyer:   A young man with great talent but too many distractions, with his families move to the Central Coast, did not allow Jeremy to play consistently good baseball.  A strong arm and an ability to hit the ball long saw Jeremy selected in the Hill’s State Cup team.

Matthew Fox:  Life is a ball for Matthew and he certainly enjoyed his baseball. In several games his long ball hitting put the pressure on the opposition and turned games for us. Played mostly outfield but at the end of the season returned to his favourite catching position. Selected to play for North Shore in State Cup as a guest player.

Scott Grills:            Stepped up into division one baseball and sometimes looked as if he did not believe that he could match it with the rest. Settled down to rove centre field where his speed allowed him to get to many catches. When he overcame his hesitancy in the batting box showed he could hit the ball hard and long. Unfortunately a broken ankle bone saw Scott miss the last five games of the season. Moves into U16 baseball next year.

Joshua Henderson:    Big and strong and still learning how best to use these tools and sometimes surprised himself. A strong arm saw Joshua used mainly at right field from where he took some spectacular catches and also threw runners out at first base. Also played first base and had some time on the pitchers mound. Selected in the Hill’s winning Association Cup team.

Matthew Nowak: The team’s mainstay catcher who took over the centrefield duties after the injury to Scott Grills. Good hands and quick to read the flight of the ball allowed him to take some match winning fly balls. Lost a little bit of confidence in the batting box near the end of the season and started to chase bad pitches. Selected in the Hill’s winning Association Cup team.

Roswell Oey:      Played most of the season at second base where he was able to pull off some spectacular plays. An aggressive approach in the batting box saw Ros come up many extra base hits despite his smaller size. Still a bit tentative against the faster bigger players but this will be overcome as he starts to catch up with them in the next couple of years. Selected in the Hill’s winning Association Cup team.

Timothy Theos:    Great attitude for the game and an ability, even at this age, to be able to read the game situation and make the difficult play. Played third base and moved to short stop when Byron was on the mound.  A solid batting performance to take out the batting award but can do much better in this area with more work. Selected in the Hills State Cup team.

Callum Turnbull:       Also stepped up into division one baseball and found a whole new ball game. Life is tough but Callum stuck at it and came away as the team’s Mr. Fixit. Played first base and outfield and when called to pitch, he had an ability to get most opposition innings shut down pretty quick and win the ball game for us. Moves into U16 baseball next year.

Finally I need to thank all the parents who ably supported the team and who assisted with training and pre game preparation throughout the season. Also my thanks to Greg Mansfield and Greg Nowak who helped base coach, to Welly for handling the paper side and to Sue and Juanine who kept the scorebook and made stats retrieval easy.

Ken Douglass

Coach

Minor Premiers & Grand Finalists was a fantastic effort from our boys this season. We went into 2nd division with four 9 year olds and seven 10 year olds. A very positive result considering the young age of the boys.

As a side there is room for a lot of improvement across the field and also in the batting box. This is to be expected and the boys will grow as a side next year on the larger diamond in 1st Division. Our base running was on the money 99% of the time.

We played some exceptional baseball this season with numerous double plays and catches taken in the outfield that quite frankly we should not have got close to catching- but we did.

 My baseball side as follows.

Tim Bourke- Left handed pitcher who has a fluent style that will take him along way with hard work. Can throw very hard when he is in the zone.Keep working the batting box Tim.

Pete Graham- Sometimes having Pete in the outfield is like having an extra fielder- he is everywhere. Pete can actually play any position on the field.

Harrison Garrett- Harrison can hit the ball to any part of the field & at times was explosive in the box. Arm injury slowed him up this season but I’m sure Harrison will work hard for next year.

Mitchell Sedgers- This boy has enough personality to fill 2 teams. Only 2 K2’s all season and finished 3rd in the averages. Will rev up anyone who is close to him. A great team player- Thanks RB.

Jordan Theos- I hope Jordan works hard in the off season with his catching. He has the ability to play rep baseball with a gun arm and tidy glove work. Can hit the ball along way.

Jake Bohan- Jake took away our pitching award because he worked extremely hard not only at training but after hours as well. He came up with the results and lead us as our main pitcher all season. Well done Jake.

Erik Trampe- The youngest player in our side but has one of the stronger arms. Erik will always play infield and will get better and better and better as the years go along. Picked up numerous double plays this year. Explosive baserunner.

Hayden Webster- Hayden reads the game very well and knows when the coach is desperate for a hit. His aim is to put the ball in play. This is why Hayden took out the batting average. Also finished with only 2 K2’s this season. I expect Hayden’s pitching to go to the next level next year. Well Done Jonny.

Tim Wakefield- I’m sure Tim wears his catching gear to bed- and thus took away the Coaches Award because of his hard work and a want to improve himself. Very tidy at home plate. Excellent work little mate.

Jacob Adams- The big fella worked out that it is OK to dislike a baseball. His batting improved out of sight at the end of the year. Made 3rd base his own with no fuss 5 to 3 plays all season.

Ben Tranter- Finished 2nd in the batting averages this year. Played solid at 1st base and made some great outs. Great job Bear!

My emphasis is based on hard work at training and I must say attendance at training this year was fantastic- this is where results come from and also allows the boys to play in another level of baseball in the future.

After the game on Grand final whilst standing over 3rd base in the team huddle there was not a dry eye among us. This was an important game for us as a team but we came up a little short on the day. As a baseball side we expressed that we wanted to play baseball together and we never gave up. I am proud of every single boy in my side this year.

I would also like to thank some great people.

Phil Hemmer -Your knowledge of the game for someone who is only 6 years older than these boys was invaluable. Your sense of humour will take you along way. Back yourself big fella.

My scorers- Darelle & Jodie who took the book every week and did a great job. ( Jodie – please don’t pick on Steve No.2) Trudie made a guest appearance in the Grand Final as a scorer. Thankyou as well for you support.

Clare- Thanks for screaming and for your support.

Bruce Adams- Thanks for allowing Clare to scream and being a top fight manager. Thanks for the White Bear.

Guy “Mr.ebay” Bohan- Thanks for helping me lift the boys in the semis & also for bringing your arm to training.

Scott Wakefield – We will catch up for a beer soon. Thanks old mate!

Steve Webster No.1- Everybody needs a Steve. Steve did the stats and kept me informed at all times with what ever I needed as a coach. I also wish to thankyou for what you brought to the club as Junior Co-coordinator this season.

Steve Webster No.2- Mate- how funny are you!

The umpires who called my games at Northmead- Nick, Peter & Pam thankyou very much for your help. Pam, Linda Ray & the rest of the committee thankyou.

I can’t wait till next year

Congratulations to Kevin Johnson Under 17’s side in taking out their competition. Also Ken Sharpe & Keith Crinion for bringing home the Douglass League Under 12 competition trophy for our club.

Next season is not too far away.

U/12 GIRLS - ROSELLAS

At the beginning of the season we had little problem grading the girls into teams, we were trying for two teams but were a few players short of two teams so we went with a rather big squad of thirteen players, very good for future expansion but a few too many at times for game days.

We managed to rotate the team well enough with the more experienced players performing very well in the division we were allocated. Two afternoons training was very beneficial to the whole team’s general improvement. We had not done much pitching before so the first few games were very nervous and difficult, we only managed to win one of the 1st four games but had only lost the three games by 1 or 2 runs. By the time we played the fifth game we were getting confident and our pitchers were not so intimidated, in our 5th game we beat the eventual Minor Premiers Schofields 13-2 which really helped the girls believe in themselves. Still, after two thirds of the season the team just out of the Semi Final position; it was going to be a tight finish to the season. The extra practice was really paying off by now and we managed to win our last five games quite easily to finish 3rd in the competition after the regular season. The Semi Final game was a bit of an anticlimax as both teams played a below than average game, we lost by a single run 10-9 but could have won if a few little things had gone our way. It was a great achievement for the mostly underage girls to reach the semis and along the way compete against bigger and older boys’ teams.

During the season we played a live ball Gala day at Ku Ring Gai Steelers where many complimentary comments were received regarding the competitiveness of a girls’ team.

We had a few tears along the way but I believe we had much more laughter than tears, we certainly had a few exciting games and some memorable plays were made.

I would like to thank the girls and their parents for many enjoyable memories and look forward to seeing many of the team developing into good baseball players.

Many thanks to Ian Whichello for assisting with coaching and also Katherine Taylor and Leanne Butt for the scoring duties.

UNDER 10 KOOKAS- T-Ball/Modball

2004-2005 UNDER 10 KOOKAS

COACH                  ROSS MILLS

A/COACH               CHRIS MILLS

MANAGER             JO HENDERSON

ASSISTANTS        DEAN ROBSON, NIGEL HENDERSON, JAMES MOSES

SCORERS             LYNNE EMERTON, RACHEL O’BRIEN

The Kookas started this our second season of under 10 baseball with the addition of two new players in Matthew Mace & Michael Moses. The rest of the roster was made up from last years “veterans”, & so was a balanced side with many proven performers; & hence expectations of doing well.  The boys didn’t disappoint & finished off a great year as runners up in a really tough competition.  Along the way we played some great baseball; hit a few hurdles; suffered from the odd atrocious umpiring decision but kept turning up to play; & best all we developed & enjoyed our games.

The first 11 eleven of this season’s games were played under Mod Ball rules with Dean Robson pitching at the boys with an occasional assist from James Moses. The team went 9-2; losing only to the mighty Castle Hill team who would go on to win the comp & in one other game against Winston Hills when we threw it away to go down by 2 runs.

I used this first part of the season as preparation for the “live ball” games that would come later in the year. In most games we tried a few different things; & rotated players through different positions looking for the balance we would need when some of our guys would be on the mound pitching while others would be off in the bull pen warming up. While the boys enjoyed this part of the comp; smashing 166 runs & working equally hard in defence there was never any doubt that what the boys really wanted to do was play live ball.

At the Christmas break the competition was divided into 2 separate divisions with only the top 4 teams going into the upper tier.  For the rest of the season we would play the CH Knights, CH Crusaders & the Kellyville Colts every 3 weeks over a 9 game program;  facing the prospect of no easy games & no where to hide.

From the opening live ball game against the Knights I honestly think that the guys were shocked by the change in tempo & intensity of the game. We got smashed up badly & went down 14-1 & it was clear that we had some heavy work to do if we wanted to think of ourselves as a good baseball team.

To their credit the boys met the challenge & over the next 8 weeks made the transition from being a mod ball team to a fully fledged baseball team.  We beat the CH Crusaders 3-0; shared the honours with the Colts with 1 win each & a draw, & scared the heck out of the Knights in our next 2 games against them only to go down 3-0.

For the record we played in total 9 live ball games. Won 4. Lost 4 & drew 1. We scored another 84 runs while giving up 73 which brought or tally for the full season to 250 runs scored against 147 runs against.

We used a total of 4 pitchers over 33 2/3 innings; with Hayden Weidner, Matthew Mace, Mitch Emerton & Nathan Robson all doing a great job while learning a new craft. Together they struck out 50 batters. The rest of the team contributed with 161 outs including 34 catches; 29 tags; 13 put outs on base; & 6 double plays; one of which was an unassisted effort by Tim Henderson.

For the full season our attack the team scored 6 Home Runs, racked up 199 RBI’s; & stole255 bases, & delivered a very creditable team batting average of 0.498.

If anything, the 3 games against the Knights demonstrate our team’s improvement in the second half of the comp. We lost the first 14-1. Castle Hill had to come from behind in the second game before beating us 6-4. And in the third we should have had a  4-3 win to our credit; only to be denied by two pivotal, & outrageous umpiring decisions that got CH over the line.  At the end of the game the opposing coach told me that the Kookas were the better team on the day. He was right!! And in saying that I take nothing away from the Knights who were clearly the best team in the comp & deserving premiers; but we should have been allowed to win that one.

You should have seen the boys play that day. Everything clicked into place, & we played some great fighting baseball in a tight 4 innings game.

In attack we fought hard, & batted with discipline against not only the best pitcher in the comp, but against also arguably the best pitching roster. Our base running was fantastic, & we applied lots of pressure to the CH infield defence. When the evitable  errors came we quickly capitalized on them to score 4 runs against a gun side that only allowed on average 3 runs for the rest of the season.

In defence we used 3 pitchers on that day. Robson, Emerton & Mace & all were superb. Mitch Seager had his best game behind the plate & was as solid as a rock until relieved by alternate catcher Tim Henderson who carried on his good work. The infield choked the life out of CH with Josh Ugarte, Simon Peterson & Hayden Weidner being prominent & dominating their opponents. Liam West saved a certain run with good outfield defence while Kyle O’Brien, Michael Moses & Josh Kim all did their part in a solid team performance.

So all in all, we had a great year. Apart from not winning the comp we achieved everything that we had set out to do back in September. We had a lot of fun. We developed as a team & as individuals; identified some still untapped potential in some guys, & rose to the point where this group of guys is ready to play in, & face the challenges that will come next year in the lower divisions of under 12 baseball.

I would like to thank a number of people who gave invaluable assistance. Firstly, my son & Assistant Coach Chris for his input whenever his R.A.N. duties permitted.  I would also like to thank Dean Robson who pitched for the boys during the first part of the season; as well as assisting at every training session; & as a base coach in the second part of our season.

Others who deserve credit & praise are Nigel Henderson, Rob Petersen, Graeme Emerton, & James Moses. And I cannot forget our two lady scorers; Lynn Emerton & Rachel O’Brien who gave freely of their time each week; & without whom we would not have been able to play. Thank you ladies.

And last but by no means least I would like to thank our team’s great manager Jo Henderson. Jo assisted me & the team mightily by being pro active in looking after all those little details of function & organisation that a coach would rather do without. It really helps because it allows the coach to coach without having to administrate. Thanks Jo. Much appreciated.

To the parents. Once again thank you for the positive & enthusiastic way that you went about supporting the boys in general & Chris & I personally. Hopefully I will see you all back next year.

To the players; thanks for your efforts guys. We had a  good season. I really enjoyed it & I hope to see you all running around the park for Baulko again next year.

OUR TEAM:

HAYDEN WEIDNER: Hayden started this year on fire with his bat only to falter when live ball came around, before regaining his composure & confidence & climbing back up the batting stats with some great late season at bats. He finished with a still solid batting average of 0.510.  Hayden usually plays Shortstop but he was moved around a lot this year which no doubt hurt his defensive stats, but contributed to many of our wins because of the balance & versatility that he brought to different positions. When Hayden did get his chance at Shortstop he was deadly. He also had a short stint as a catcher & in game 14 as a relief pitcher where he threw for 1 inning against 4 batters for a single out.  Another solid performance across the whole season.

JOSHUA KIM: JK was another to struggle a bit with his bat in this his 2nd season of baseball. Even so he still finished with an average of 0.264 & hit 11RBI’s. In defence Josh mainly played outfield & occasionally at 3rd Base. Josh also pulled off 2 double plays; the second of which in game 10 was pivotal in securing the team a tough win against Carlingford. I am confident that JK will find his bat because of his great attitude to training & the game. A fantastic team player who took on any task asked of him & a pleasure to coach.

JOSHUA UGARTE: Winner of this years Coach’s Award. Josh backed up a very good 2003-4 season with an even better 2004-5 to grab this season’s coach’s award. Like last year Josh worked very well in a number of defensive positions, before being moved to 1st Base when we hit live ball. He proved to be as solid as a rock in this assignment & had a hand in 20 dismissals. In attack Josh hit a very good average of 0.593; mainly as a lead of batter which amounts to a fantastic result in a tough assignment. He also led the team in runs scored & hits & delivered 16 team RBI’s. Josh’s award is well deserved & comes not only in recognition of this attitude to training & the game, but for the effort, application & hard work that he put in this year; & for achieving improvement in every aspect of his game. Congratulations Josh.

KYLE O’BRIEN: Kyle is another team player with a fantastic attitude & determination to do well that makes him a great asset. Early in the season Kyle put in some good performances at Catcher before being moved to 3rd Base & outfield. Regardless of where he was placed Kyle gave 100%. In game 8 he twice tagged lead runners at 3rd Base to choke the life out of a threatening Castle Hill Lancers team. In attack Kyle hit an average of 0.309; & scored 8 RBI’s.

LIAM WEST: Liam played his 2nd season of baseball in 2004-5. Last year he had the dubious honour of being the only member of our team to be ‘beaned ‘ by the coach. This year he had the even more dubious distinction of being the only team member to be sent to hospital after being hit in the kidneys by a pitched ball in game 16. To his credit when Liam returned from injury he continued to go out to bat in the last 3 games & drove in another 2 RBI’s to bring his season tally to 19; tied for 3rd in the order of merit in RBI’s & for the season’s batting average with  a very impressive 0.600.  Liam was also very versatile in defence & contributed with 9 dismissals & some solid performances at Left Field & 3rd Base.

MATTHEW MACE :  Winner of this year’s MVP Award. To win a MVP in your rookie year is a rare achievement, but Matthew made it look easy. He possesses genuine talent & natural abilities far in excess of his age & experience. Mattie can play just about everywhere, &we used him to good effect at Shortstop & 2nd Base at times. But primarily Matthew was first & foremost a pitcher, & at times a ferocious bat.

Mattie’s MVP stats speak for themselves. As a pitcher he pitched in 8 games for a total of 152/3 innings. He faced 86 batters & struck out 26 of them for a 0.302 strike out ratio. He also led the team’s pitchers in runs conceded with only 1.213 runs per inning. As a batsmen Matthew excelled in the live ball comp & topped the batting averages during that part of the season with a very respectable average of 0.421; & a full 20 games season average of 0.618; the 2nd highest for the team. He also delivered 26 RBI’s. And Mattie is still just short of his 9th birthday!!!

I am confident that Matthew has that something special needed to excel in baseball while ever continues to apply himself & enjoy the game. Congratulations Matthew.

MICHAEL MOSES: Michael was a fantastic little player who really enjoyed his year. He was always eager to play &  always gave his all. Best of all was that Michael always had a smile on his face. His speed was a real asset in the outfield & & he really gave it a go even though it took him away from his favoured 2nd Base position. It was really great to see Michael grow in confidence & by season’s end he was really having a go with both bat & glove. He finished with a batting average of 0.349, & 7 RBI’s.

MITCHELL EMERTON:  Mitch had another solid year of baseball as his stats show. He finished 5th in our team batting with an average of 0.561 & contributed 26 RBI’s. In defence Mitch was dependable  & played at 1st & 3rd Bases & was involved one way or the other with 29 dismissals of opponents. As a pitcher Mitch threw 4 2/3 innings; facing 40 batters with 8 K2’s for a strike out ratio of 0.200.  Mitch was another of the players that was unlucky not to get the coaches award.

A great effort.

MITCHELL SEAGER: Winner of the team’s Batting Award.

In only his 2nd year of baseball Mitch was once again one of the mainstays of the team. This year we started the conversion of Mitch from being one of our regular Shortstops to that of Catcher; a position that he is well suited for & destined to play more regularly. When put behind the plate Mitch excelled but he was equally handy in either infield or outfield & pulled down 8 catches. In attack Mitch had another big year with the bat to grab the teams Batting Award with a season average of 0.630. He also drove in 29 RBI’s & 2 Home Runs.  Well done Mitch.

NATHAN ROBSON: Nathan is another of our players having only his 2nd year in the game; not that you can tell by his confidence, focus & abilities. Nath contributed in every facet of the game & was once again a mainstay of the team. As a pitcher he shows great promise & is destined to spend a lot of time on the mound in future years. This year he threw 12 1/3 innings; facing 77 batters of whom he struck out 16 for a very respectable strike out ratio of 0.208; while giving up 2.5 runs per inning. When not hurling from the plate Nath also did some good stuff at 2nd Base with 4 catches & 6 tags amongst a season tally of 17 dismissals. In attack Nathan hit 0.431 with 14 RBI’s & 1 Home Run. He also led the team in stolen bases. All in all he had a great season & it was difficult not to grant him this year’s coach’s award. Well done Nathan.

SIMON PETERSON: I think it is fair to say that Simon struggled a bit this year with his batting particularly when it came to live ball, & yet he still delivered a very good season average of 0.510. This year Simon had some eyesight problems but once he gets past them I am sure that he is destined to make it back as one of our big gun bats. In defence Simon was Mr. Versatile playing at catcher, 2nd Base & outfield; all of which assignments he handled well. In game 9 he pulled off a fantastic catcher’s double play to top off a great effort.

TIM HENDERSON:  Tim had another great year & did some solid things for us as one of our 2 regular catchers in the live ball part of the season. When not behind the plate Tim played a lot of 1st Base particularly in the first part of the season. He pulled off one great unassisted double play & was involved in 14 other dismissals. In attack Tim hit 0.596 with 19 RBI’s &  2 Home Runs. He was also 2nd in the team order of merit for stolen bases. He loved playing live ball & played as he trained & was another guy in strong consideration for an award.  A real team player.  Well done Tim.

UNDER 10 EMUS- T-Ball/Modball

We had a slow start to the competition with a series of losses that looked like making it a long season. Things turned around for us in the run up to the break with some great play resulting in some good Tee Ball wins. Our good form continued with Mod Ball after the break – where we started off with a tense 1-0 win. We worked the batting hard at training and the kids all made the transition to the pitched ball far more easily than I expected. By the end of the season it was clear that we were better Mod Ballers than Tee Ballers.

Once again it was great to see the kids coming along with both their skills and their knowledge of the game. It was very rewarding to see drills from training come into play in the game and to see kids start making decisions in the field.

We were fortunate to be able to finish the year with an unplanned and very enjoyable Parents v Kids match. There is some talent there for senior scouts, especially with the Mums.

Thanks to all of the kids for a great season, it has been a pleasure.

A special mention to all the parents for their help during the year; from pitching (fun to watch but harder than it looks with those tiny zones), to coaching on third, running the batting line-up (chaos) and helping with drills. Special thanks to Mark as Manager and Umpire (extra special thanks from me on the umpiring) & JoAnn and Kerry for scoring,

Andrew

UNDER 10 MAGPIES- T-Ball/Modball

The U/10 Magpies had a very successful and enjoyable season. After a slow start the Magpies started to string some wins together and by the end of the t-ball section of the season were challenging the leading teams. There was steady improvement through this part of the season in both fielding and batting with all of team’s thirteen players contributing.

After several weeks of practice for mod ball the team hit the ground running,  winning all except one of the post Christmas games. The loss was to the ultimate competition winners Castle Hill. The Magpies were only a point behind right through the last few weeks but couldn’t nudge ahead and finished a very satisfying second in the league.

The most pleasing part of the mod ball was that all of the players contributed each week with different kids getting important hits in all games. All thirteen players remained committed and enthusiastic right to seasons end and I’m sure will be back to the club next year

Mark Hopley

Coach

UNDER 8 TEE-BALL KOOKAS

Coach:                                                                     Guy Bohan

Assistant Coach/Umpire:                                   Michael Millson

Scorer:                                                                    Lisé Bellam

Aim for 2004/05 Season:                                        To be the best batting, best fielding and best catching team in our League.

The Team:            A better team of kids you’d be hard pressed to find.  They all responded to Coach Bohan’s focus on the basics which provided a sound foundation for some truly impressive performances come game time.  This team really enjoyed playing the game, easily living up to the season aims.

Michael Bellam:  In his first season of T-ball set an impressive benchmark.  Once he had the basics under control, regularly hit 3 home runs per game and matched this in the infield.

Tim Bellam:          Another first timer who came on strongly and became a real team player late in the season, urging the others on in the field.  A strong batter who’s game will improve with greater concentration.

Mackenzie Bohan:              Thoroughly enjoyed his second season, putting the big bat to use with plenty of home runs.  Led the charge in the field and relished his opportunities in the infield and sharing the time at first base.

Nicholas Elliot:     After a late start due to (non-baseball) injury, made a real impact in an already strong team.  Most consistent batter with a great eye for the ball and notched up some home runs late in the season.  A quality infielder and hard worker in the outfield.

Tyler Emerton:       Reliable batter whose work on technique saw him regularly hitting into right field in the second half of the season.  Used this to capitalise on his base running to get into home run territory.  Now a two season veteran and still only 6 years old.

Emily Graham:     No one in the team worked harder on their game.  Consistent hitter into left field and was rewarded with her first home run; backed this up with solid performances on base and in the outfield.

Josh Katz:               Best power to weight ratio in the team at bat (although unlucky not to score a home run) and a strong base runner.  Fabulous in the field and relished his opportunities on the bases, particularly first, with great catching ability.

Jack Millson:       Yet another powerful batter who, in his second season, gave right field a hammering for his home run tally.  A strong arm in the outfield and always attentive in the infield; another who enjoyed the chance at first base.

Daniel Pesavento:              Cemented his position as lead off batter as the season progressed and another to notch up home runs.  Excellent base runner and eager in the field, his throwing, in particular, improved due to the effort he put in.

Josh Potter:         Boundless energy and enthusiasm harnessed to become a strong batter and enthusiastic fielder.  Always on the lookout for the play in the infield and notched up more home runs for the team.

Liam Nettleton:    Notable for a number of stunning reflex actions at pitcher and infield resulting in outs, either directly or with first base.  The most accurate of hitters, threading the ball into left field consistently and yet more home runs.

Adrian Rochester:              The strongest, flattest throw in U8s.  Mid season illness took the edge off his game but he rebounded with great effect.  Yet another home run batter and versatile in the field with his general athleticism, catching and throwing skills.

UNDER 8 TEE-BALL MAGPIES

The U8 magpies had a great season. For many of the kids, this was their first year of tee-ball and their rate of improvement was pleasing to see. Amazingly, with such an inexperienced team, we managed to win all games, and most importantly, had a lot of fun at the same time.

All kids contributed throughout the season. The batting was generally very good, but the real area of improvement came in the fielding with many catches being taken and lots of run outs. At times, the standard of the fielding was very impressive indeed.

Here is a quick player summary;

Alexander - for his first season, did very well with some reliable hitting and good catching on first base

Alex - continued to improve and surprised all the team when he took a great out field catch while filling in for the other team

Jack - the youngest player in the team. Hit the ball well and did well for his first season

Laura - great team player with the best speed around the bases. Listened very well and was a delight to coach

Nathan - did very well for his first year. Excellent catching on 1st base and has a promising future

Luke - developed his hitting well throughout the season and hit many home runs. Improved well throughout the year

Lauren - did some excellent fielding at the end of the year and came up with a number of outs

Thomas - did well in the field with his reliable throwing to 1st base. Good, strong accurate throw. Good hitting as well

Louise - excellent improvement from last year. Took her first catch in the field and did some excellent work on 1st base. Good listener and team player

James - big improver from last year. Hit too many home runs to count and most pleasingly improved his catching and throwing all through the season. Excellent season and has a bright future in the game

Tom - like James, had an excellent season. Produced many great throws to first base and took some great catches. Hitting was good as well. Also has a bright future in the game

All through the season we applied a simple principle, and that being that we share the work around to all kids. To see the kids develop their skills and knowledge of the game was great. The games were enjoyable to watch.

Last but not least, the parents deserve a big thankyou. A stand out feature of our team as we traveled from game to game was that when our team turned up, we had lots of Dads warming up with the kids. We were organised and reliable. Ian and Beck did good jobs at scoring, Tim and James likewise with umpiring. Lots of Dads helped out on the bases and covering canteen duty got done one way or another. Our team was always well supported. That means a lot to the kids.

Thanks for a good season and I hope many of the kids come back to play another season of tee-ball or move on to play mod ball next season.

Richard Roberts

UNDER 8 TEE-BALL ROSELLAS

Our team goal this year, given that the team was made up exclusively of kids that had never played before, was to provide a pleasurable and safe introduction for new players to the sport and to the club. We achieved this goal through the terrific efforts of the players, parents and the Baulko Club.

As you can imagine, there were a lot of new things to be learned at the start of the season and it fair to say we were pretty raw but by the end of the season there was a noticeable improvement in the basic skills level of the players and their understanding of what to do. (Heck, we even started tagging up on those flyballs J ) So some good foundations were laid for future years. The players can be proud of their efforts and what they achieved.

Aside from the efforts of the kids there were some superb efforts from the “grown-ups” this season. All the parents were especially supportive of their own kids and of the team as a whole. Of those parents, thanks to Adrian Yan for scoring week in and week out and to Leon Carroll for helping out in any way that he could, from training on Wednesday nights to organising and umpiring on home games. A special thanks however must go to the other coach of the Rosellas, Robin Ross, for the training sessions she ran on a Wednesday Night and for her superior team management skills on game day. The team couldn’t have achieved what it did with out you.

As a coach, I appreciated the tremendous support provided by Steve Webster and the rest of the Baulko Club in the early part of the session.

As a parent, I am wrapped with the approach the club has towards the introduction and development of young players to the sport. The culture and expertise within the club allows a young player to learn the correct way to approach all facets of the game. There is a sense that it is possible for a player to reach their full potential in such an environment.

Rosella’s, you did great this year. You learnt heaps, tried hard and played your best. I hope to see you all back next year for another great season.
